A Singapore court has on Tuesday sentenced a 29-year-old Indian-origin offender, S. Mageshwaran, to nearly 22 months in jail and 12 cane strokes for his involvement in a harpoon attack.
Mageshwaran pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including harassment, possession of the harpoon, and traffic offenses, committed during a remission period.
The possession of the weapon resulted in a sentence of 17 months, 19 weeks, and 3 days in jail, with an additional 5 days added to the original term.
Mageshwaran was also disqualified from holding or obtaining driving licenses for four months after his release.
The court heard that he handed the harpoon to his alleged accomplice, Sheran Raj Balasubramaniam, who used it to stab a 23-year-old victim.
Mageshwaran’s lawyer cited his client’s major depressive disorder and relationship issues, emphasizing his lack of knowledge about the intended use of the harpoon.
The victim, also 23, was found to be bleeding profusely with the 20 cm-long weapon stuck in his back following the attack in June 2022.
