US Lawmaker Backs Trump Tariffs, Targets China’s Trade Status

Congressman John Moolenaar, chairman of the House Select Committee on China, has recently voiced his support behind former President Donald Trump’s latest move to impose tariffs on Chinese imports.

He stated that the decision reflects a growing push to protect American workers and challenge China’s unfair trade tactics.

Linking Tariffs To Legislative Action

Moolenaar connected the new tariffs to his Restoring Trade Fairness Act, which seeks to strip China of its permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) status. The move, he said, is long overdue.

“For far too long, the Chinese Communist Party has exploited America’s generosity, stolen our intellectual property, and undermined our workers,” Moolenaar stated. “It’s time to put American workers first and stop letting China game the system.”

Trade Deficit & National Security Concerns

The congressman also raised alarms about the persistent U.S.-China trade gap, warning that it reflects how China has used America’s consumer-driven economy to its advantage.

“Our economic strength has been turned against us,” he said. “We need to stop that and prioritize fairness in trade.”

Moolenaar criticized the current system, saying it allows China to cheat, exploit loopholes, and threaten U.S. manufacturers and national security.

“China has weaponized our open markets against us,” he added. “We need to close those loopholes and enforce fair rules.”

Growing Bipartisan Momentum

Moolenaar’s bill has gained traction across party lines, signaling rare bipartisan agreement on the need to counter China’s economic aggression. Industry groups and lawmakers alike have voiced support for a tougher trade stance.

He emphasized that both the tariffs and his legislation are about rebalancing U.S. trade policy to focus on national interests.

“This is about recalibrating our trade stance and making sure U.S. interests come first,” Moolenaar concluded.
