Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasized the importance of swift justice in cases involving crimes against women, stating that it will provide greater assurance of their safety.
The prime minister also highlighted that the judiciary is regarded as the guardian of the Constitution, and that both the Supreme Court and the judiciary have upheld this responsibility. Addressing the inaugural session of a national conference of the district judiciary, in the presence of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Modi noted that the people of India have consistently shown trust in the Supreme Court and the judiciary.
Referring to the imposition of the Emergency as a “dark” period, the Prime Minister praised the judiciary for its crucial role in upholding fundamental rights during that time. Regarding national security, Modi said the judiciary has safeguarded national integrity by prioritizing national interests.
In light of recent incidents, including the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata and the sexual assault of two kindergarten girls in Thane, Modi expressed concern over atrocities against women and the safety of children.
“The faster justice is delivered in cases of atrocities against women, the greater assurance half of the population will have about their safety,” Modi stated. He also mentioned the existence of several stringent laws to address crimes against women and stressed the need for better coordination within the criminal justice system to ensure swift justice.
