Madhya Pradesh HC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Children’s Death Caused By Open Tube Wells

MP HC

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has recently taken suo motu cognizance of the unfortunate incidents where children accidentally fell into uncovered tube wells, leading to their death.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice Vishal Mishra has issued a notice to the State authorities and scheduled a hearing after four weeks.

The Court has taken note of the matter based on several articles published in daily newspapers that reported on children losing their lives after falling into tube wells within the State.

One such incident occurred on June 6 in Mugawali village, where a three-year-old girl named Srishti Kushwaha accidentally slipped into an abandoned borewell while playing.

The three-year-old girl, found herself trapped approximately 40 feet below the surface inside the borewell. Unfortunately, during the rescue attempts, the vibrations caused by the equipment used inadvertently pushed her down by an additional 100 feet. Despite the efforts made during the rescue operation that lasted for more than 50 hours, she was eventually brought up from the 300-foot well unconscious and was later pronounced dead on June 8.

The Court acknowledged that similar incidents have occurred in the past, prompting them to take appropriate action in response to the matter.
