The Law Ministry on Thursday has reported that approximately 1.6 lakh out of 2.99 lakh cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been resolved in the 410 dedicated POCSO courts across India.
In response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that India has set up 410 exclusive POCSO courts since 2019 to address cases under the POCSO Act. These courts have registered a total of 2,99,759 cases, with 1,62,497 cases already resolved.
Uttar Pradesh leads the numbers with 90,822 cases across 74 POCSO courts, of which 34,998 have been disposed of. Madhya Pradesh, with 57 courts, has dealt with 29,419 cases and resolved 22,456. Bihar, which operates 46 courts, has managed 30,203 cases and disposed of 11,798. In Rajasthan, 30 courts have recorded 14,938 cases, resolving 10,138, while Gujarat’s 24 courts have handled 14,524 cases with 9,793 disposed of.
Other states have also contributed significantly. Andhra Pradesh, with 16 courts, has registered 11,774 cases and disposed of 4,899. Assam’s 17 courts recorded 11,756 cases and resolved 5,893. Tamil Nadu’s 14 courts have managed 11,679 cases, with 7,225 disposed of.
Notably, Chandigarh, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands do not have exclusive POCSO courts, resulting in no cases being handled in these regions.
