Mayurbhanj district Court of Odissa, a 60-year-old convict Jagamahan Naik was sentenced to twenty years in prison for the rape of a five-year-old girl, who is his relative. The Mayurbhanj District Special POCSO Court, presided over by Judge Sumita Jena, found Naik guilty of the rape and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, as stated by Special Public Prosecutor Abhinna Kumar Pattnaik.
In addition to the prison sentence and fine, the court directed the Mayurbhanj District Legal Services Authority to compensate the minor girl’s family with Rs 4 lakh.
The horrific incident occurred in March 2021 when Naik raped the young girl while she was alone at home. Following the incident, the minor’s mother lodged a complaint with the Jharpokhria Police Station, leading to the arrest of the elderly man.
The court’s judgment was based on the statement of the young victim, along with testimonies from 13 witnesses and medical reports, as presented by the public prosecutor during the trial.
