Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has landed in controversy after an alleged social media comment targeting the Brahmin community sparked outrage online.

Known for his outspoken and often provocative views, Kashyap is accused of using offensive language in response to a troll on Instagram.

The controversy erupted during an online exchange under a post where Kashyap voiced his support for the upcoming film Phule, which stars Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa as the revered 19th-century social reformers Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule. Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, the film has been surrounded by debate due to its critical portrayal of the caste system and its references to Brahminical dominance in historical contexts.

In his post, Kashyap questioned the continued existence of casteism in India and expressed frustration over how films like Punjab 95 and Dhadak 2, which also deal with socially sensitive themes, face delays or censorship.

An Instagram user responded to the post by mocking Kashyap, writing, “Brahmins are your father.” In reply, the filmmaker allegedly commented, “Brahmin pe main m****ga… koi problem?” (translated: “I’ll urinate on Brahmins… any problem?”).

Screenshots of the exchange quickly went viral, prompting widespread backlash and triggering the hashtag #ArrestAnuragKashyap to trend on X (formerly Twitter).

Public Outcry & Reactions

Social media users across platforms condemned the comment, accusing Kashyap of hate speech and disrespecting a religious and cultural community.

“Anurag Kashyap openly saying this to Brahmins… No outrage??? Why??” one user asked on X. Another wrote, “Brahmins are being targeted—this time by Anurag Kashyap.”

Some critics demanded legal action against the director, accusing him of inciting hatred and calling for his arrest under relevant provisions of the IPC.

Background On Film

Phule, originally scheduled to release on April 11, has been postponed to April 25. The film aims to shed light on the work of Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule, who campaigned for Dalit rights and education reforms, especially for women. The movie has drawn criticism from some sections who feel it casts certain historical communities in a negative light.
