Police have arrested two individuals, Raju Das and Paban Darjee, for extorting ₹20,000 from a tiles businessman in Jalukbari, Guwahati. The arrest was made on Wednesday.

According to the police, the accused extorted money from several commercial establishments in Guwahati. The incident began when the victim, the proprietor of The Tiles Gallery, received a handwritten note from someone identifying himself as Anup Chetia. The note instructed the victim to call a specific number, where the extortion began.

Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah explained that after the victim made the call, the accused demanded money and threatened severe consequences if it was not paid. On August 17, 2024, ₹20,000 was handed over to an associate of the caller in front of Radisson Blu hotel.

A subsequent technical analysis revealed that Das and Darjee were running the extortion racket, posing as members of ULFA. They have now been arrested by the West Guwahati Police and are in custody at the Jalukbari police outpost.
