A special court in Bhubaneswar has recently sent the 3 accused railway officials to judicial custody in the Balasore train disaster, after the end of their CBI remand period.

Three railway officials, namely Arun Kumar Mahanta, Mohammed Amir Khan, and Pappu Kumar, who were arrested by the CBI in connection with the Balasore train disaster, have been sent to judicial custody by a special court in Bhubaneswar.

The accused were arrested by the CBI on July 7.

The officials, who were placed under suspension by the Railways, appeared before the CBI Special Court after the conclusion of their remand period.

The next date of hearing is on July 27.

The three accused have been booked under IPC Sections 304 and 201, and under Section 153 of the Railways Act.

While the CBI is yet to submit its report on the case, the inquiry report of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Eastern Circle, has stated that the accident took place due to “lapses” in the signalling circuit alteration.

The CBI is currently investigating the case, while the next hearing is scheduled for July 27.

The tragic incident claimed 293 lives and left over 1,200 injured on June 2 when the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train in Balasore district and some of its coaches collided with the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express.
