Calcutta High Court Bar Association Boycotts Proceedings Following Brutal Assault on Lawyer

The Calcutta High Court Bar Association resolved on Monday to abstain from all judicial proceedings in response to an incident involving a lawyer who was ‘mercilessly assaulted’ by police personnel.

The incident occurred on 21st July (Sunday) at the Nepalganj Police outpost, under the jurisdiction of Bishnupur Police Station, when the lawyer arrived to attend to his client.

In a notice dated 22nd July, the High Court Bar Association stated that the sub-inspector, identified as Sudipto Sanyal, continued to assault the advocate, necessitating his transfer to Amtala Rural Hospital’s emergency ward for medical treatment. The notice further claimed that the sub-inspector falsely implicated the advocate under section 292 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and threatened additional false accusations under narcotic-related charges.

The advocate has submitted a written complaint to the DG, IG, SP, and IC, along with medical documents, requesting the preservation of CCTV footage from the Nepalganj Police outpost. It was noted that the advocate is a member of the High Court Bar Association, prompting an urgent General Body meeting based on the Secretary’s complaint.
