The Union Government, via the Ministry of Law and Justice, has notified the transfer of two judges from the Delhi High Court to other high courts. This action follows a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium, prompted by the judges’ requests for transfer from Delhi.
Justice V Kameswar Rao’s Transfer
As per the Collegium’s resolution dated March 4, 2024, Justice V Kameswar Rao of the Delhi HC expressed a desire for transfer to any other High Court. In light of this, the Collegium recommended Justice V Kameswar Rao’s transfer to the High Court of Karnataka for the better administration of justice.
In accordance with the Supreme Court’s recommendation, the Department of Justice (Appointments Division) issued a notification on Wednesday, stating that after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, President has approved the transfer of Justice Valluri Kameswar Rao to the Karnataka High Court.
Transfer of Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva
Regarding the second judge, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, the Collegium noted his willingness for transfer in a communication dated March 3, 2024. Consequently, the Collegium recommended his transfer to the High Court of Madhya Pradesh to enhance the administration of justice.
Accepting this recommendation, the Department of Justice (Appointments Division) issued a notification stating that President, after consulting with the Chief Justice of India, has approved the transfer of Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva to the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Background of the Judges
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, enrolled as an advocate in August 1988 with the Bar Council of Delhi, has a rich legal background. He practiced extensively in the Supreme Court of India, the High Court of Delhi, and the District Courts of Delhi. He also served as Standing Counsel for the Bar Council of India and as a Senior Panel Lawyer for the Union of India.
Similarly, Justice V Kameswar Rao, enrolled as an Advocate in March 1991 with the Bar Council of Delhi, has a diverse legal experience. He practiced in various courts including the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court, and other High Courts like the Madras High Court. He also represented various Public Sector Undertakings, Banks, and Autonomous Bodies.
Both judges were designated as Senior Advocates by the Delhi High Court and were subsequently elevated as judges, contributing significantly to the judiciary.
