The Central Government on Friday notified the appointment of three additional judges of the Delhi High Court as Permanent Judges.
Justice Girish Katpalia, Justice Manoj Jain, and Justice Dharmesh Sharma were elevated to Permanent Judges.
Recently, the Supreme Court collegium recommended these appointments. On March 12, the Collegium of the Delhi High Court unanimously recommended the Additional Judges for appointment as permanent Judges.
In line with the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court judges familiar with the affairs of the Delhi High Court were consulted to determine the suitability of the aforementioned Additional Judges for permanent positions.
The Committee of the Supreme Court, constituted by the Chief Justice of India per the Resolution dated October 26, 2017, assessed the judgments of these Additional Judges. The Committee rated the quality of their judgments as ‘Good’.
To evaluate the merit and suitability of these Additional Judges for permanent appointments, the Collegium scrutinized the material on record, including observations made by the Department of Justice.
On an overall consideration, the Collegium concluded that Justices Girish Katpalia, Manoj Jain, and Dharmesh Sharma are fit and suitable for appointment as permanent Judges. Therefore, the Collegium recommended their appointment as permanent Judges of the Delhi High Court against the existing vacancies.
