‘Chhaava’ Sparks Nagpur Clashes: Vicky Kaushal Movie Under Fire Amid Aurangzeb Tomb Row

The recently released film Chhaava, depicting the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, has stirred intense debate, with critics accusing it of distorting historical events.

Insights

The movie portrays the conflict between Sambhaji Maharaj and Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, but some groups argue that it exaggerates the persecution of Hindus.

Following the film’s release, protests erupted, with many claiming that the movie fueled communal tensions. Journalist Shukla criticized the situation, stating, “After watching Chhaava, people took to the streets wielding sticks and rods in the name of Aurangzeb.

Meanwhile, actor Vicky Kaushal and the film’s producers have made ₹553 crore and moved on to their next project, while the public fights among themselves.”

The controversy also spilled over to social media, where users expressed concerns about Bollywood’s role in fueling discord. One user remarked, “If you resort to violence after watching a movie or seeing an effigy being burned, you need to reassess your mindset. Those who exploit this ignorance for political gain are equally at fault.”

Another user called for a boycott of the industry, stating, “Bollywood has become a tool for spreading misinformation. Many of their recent films distort history, fueling division while conveniently staying silent on real issues. Their selective outrage exposes their hypocrisy.”

Actor Vicky Kaushal, who plays the lead role in Chhaava, faced backlash as well. Some accused him of contributing to social unrest, with one individual commenting, “Vicky Kaushal, who married a Muslim woman, is causing division in the country by being part of such propaganda films. Legal action should be taken against him.”

Katrina Kaif’s Visit To Mahakumbh Sparks Discussion

Amid the controversy, Kaushal’s wife, actress Katrina Kaif, made headlines for a different reason. Born to a Christian mother and a Muslim father, she recently visited Mahakumbh 2025 to take a holy dip. Her visit led to further discussions about interfaith relationships and Bollywood’s influence on societal perceptions.

Clashes In Nagpur Over Aurangzeb’s Tomb

Unrest in Nagpur’s Mahal area intensified after a protest organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. The demonstration escalated into violent clashes between two groups, leading to stone pelting and arson. Several vehicles, including fire brigade trucks, were set on fire, and multiple police officers and firefighters were injured in the chaos.

Law enforcement intervened by deploying tear gas and using batons to disperse the rioters. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged people to remain calm and not believe in misinformation. While acknowledging the concerns regarding Aurangzeb’s tomb, he stressed that any decision regarding its removal must follow legal procedures.

Political Reactions To Controversy

The issue also gained political traction, with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath weighing in on the matter. He stated, “Glorifying Aurangzeb is a sign of a disturbed mindset. No rational person would consider him an ideal figure.”

The ongoing debate highlights the deep historical and political divisions in India, where films, protests, and ideological clashes continue to shape public discourse.
