Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud criticized the practice of multiple lawyers mentioning the same case for urgent hearings, stating it jeopardizes his “personal credibility.”
He noted that some lawyers attempt to manipulate the system by repeatedly getting the same cases listed on different dates through various advocates.
“Stop this practice of repeated mentioning by different counsels. All of you are just trying to take a chance. Whatever little discretion I have as Chief Justice will never be exercised in your favor, because there is an attempt to take this court for a ride,” he asserted.
The Chief Justice emphasized that this tactic undermines the integrity of the court, saying, “Get three different counsels and see… the judge blinks and you get an order. This is what is happening in this court. I will not do it, because my personal credibility is at stake.”
These comments came at the beginning of the day’s proceedings when a lawyer sought urgent listing for a case concerning a lapse in a mining lease.
