“Court Orders Are Nothing If Not Implemented Properly”: Justice Battu Devanand

Justice Battu Devanand stated during his swearing-in ceremony of the Madras High Court that court orders are useless unless they are implemented properly.

“In my considered opinion, passing orders and rendering judgments is not the only duty of the courts and judges. Unless they are implemented in true letter and spirit, these orders are nothing but waste paper,” he remarked.
Speaking at his swearing-in ceremony on Monday was Justice Devanand, who was moved from the Andhra Pradesh High Court to the Madras High Court.

He was administered the oath of office by Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice T Raja.

He added that Dr. BR Ambedkar’s interactions with Tamil activist Periyar must have had some bearing on the Indian Constitution and that his parent court, the Andhra Pradesh High Court, was established as a result of the historic Madras High Court.

“Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar’s interactions with the great Periyar here in Tamil Nadu might have definitely reflected in some crucial pages of the primary law of the land that is the Constitution of India. The legacy of such luminaries spills over throughout the course of legal history made by this august High Court. It has a unique contribution in shaping the laws of our nation,” he added.

At his oath taking ceremony, Justice Devanand also remembered his late parents, who had raised him to become the man he is today. He cried as he recalled how his parents, who were merely school teachers from a small Tamil Nadu village, had taught him all the lessons and values of life.
