The Delhi Police on Tuesday apprehended a 41-year-old man who allegedly assaulted and attacked Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate Kanhaiya Kumar with ink last week, officials said.
The police identified the accused as Ajay Kumar, who was arrested from his residence in New Usmanpur, the area where the incident took place. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other suspects involved in the case.
The incident occurred on May 17 when Kanhaiya Kumar, the INDIA bloc nominee from the North East Delhi seat, was leaving the AAP office in New Usmanpur after a party meeting with local Councillor Chhaya Sharma. A group of people attacked him as he exited the office.
According to Sharma’s complaint, “Some persons came and put a garland around Kanhaiya Kumar. After garlanding him, some persons threw ink on Kanhaiya Kumar and tried to assault him.”
Sharma added that when she attempted to intervene, the group misbehaved with her and issued threats.
Based on Sharma’s complaint, an FIR was lodged against the accused under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 354 (assault or use of criminal force), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention), the police said.
Ajay was arrested from his house in New Usmanpur on Tuesday morning, a senior police officer confirmed.
“Efforts are being made to round up the other accused,” he added.
