Delhi Police Files FIR Over Derogatory Comment on Kirti Chakra Awardee Capt Anshuman Singh’s Wife

The Delhi Police have filed an FIR following a derogatory comment made about the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh.

This action was prompted by the National Commission for Women (NCW), which demanded immediate and appropriate action against the individual who made the derogatory remark.

Smriti Singh had recently received the award from President Droupadi Murmu on behalf of her husband, who died while trying to save his colleagues at an Indian Army camp in the Siachen glacier. While many users posted emotional tributes to the brave soldier, one user posted a derogatory comment, which the NCW described as “lewd” in its letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora.

The NCW pointed out that the comment made by Ahmad K, a resident of Delhi, contravenes Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. “NCW condemns this behavior and urges immediate police action,” the women’s panel stated on X.

“A complaint was received from the National Commission for Women, alleging that a Facebook profile made an extremely lewd and derogatory comment on a picture of a martyr’s widow, constituting an offense under Section 79, BNS – 2023, and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000. Taking cognizance of the complaint and after a preliminary examination of its contents, an FIR under Section 79, BNS – 2023, and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000, has been registered at PS Special Cell, and an investigation has been initiated,” a police official said.

“The FIR has been filed against the social media profile, not the user,” the officer clarified.

Captain Anshuman Singh, posted with 26 Punjab as a medical officer in Siachen, made the supreme sacrifice while saving fellow Army personnel from a fire. In 2023, a short circuit caused a fire in an Indian Army ammunition dump at Siachen at around 3 am. Captain Singh not only saved the lives of Army personnel trapped inside a fiberglass hut at the dump but also retrieved life-saving medicine from a nearby medical shelter. Unfortunately, he suffered severe burns and succumbed to his injuries.

Conferring the Kirti Chakra upon Captain Singh, President Murmu stated, “Disregarding his own safety, he exhibited exceptional bravery and resolve to rescue many people in a major fire incident.”

The Kirti Chakra was received by Captain Singh’s widow, Smriti, and her mother-in-law, Manju.
