The Madras high court on Thursday ordered notice to Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy and his wife on a criminal revision case related to their acquittal in a disproportionate wealth case.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh, the driving force behind this revision process, issued an order to serve notice to K Ponmudy and his wife Visalatchi, the accused parties. The notice is being presented on behalf of the State through the Additional Public Prosecutor.
The court has directed the Registry to ensure that the accused are served notice for a hearing scheduled on September 7, 2023.
Furthermore, the Registry has been instructed to apprise the Chief Justice of this order for informational purposes.
The prosecution case revolves around the assertion that Ponmudy, a senior leader of the DMK party, accumulated wealth amounting to Rs 1.4 crore, both in his name and that of his wife, Visalatchi. This purported wealth was deemed disproportionate to his documented sources of income during his tenure as a minister between 1996 & 2001.
