Advocates of the Calcutta High Court held a protest march on Monday (August 19), demanding justice for the junior female doctor who was raped and murdered. The advocates carried banners calling for justice for the victim.
Participating in the protest march, advocate Mousami Choudhry stated, “We want justice. We demand that the accused be arrested as soon as possible and face appropriate punishment.”
Another advocate from the Calcutta High Court, Navneet Mishra, added, “We demand that the accused should be apprehended and punished swiftly. Our request to the administration is to arrest the accused. The investigation is ongoing, and we expect the arrest to happen soon.”
Advocate Narendra emphasized, “The speed of the trial depends on the court; the CBI is currently investigating the case. The CBI must explore all angles and present its findings before the court.”
On August 19, a torchlight protest was held in Siliguri, North Bengal, under the banner of “Loud and Clear” to condemn the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital earlier this month. The ‘Mashal Julush’ protest rally, organized by a women’s voluntary organization, was held to denounce the incident that occurred at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
A protester said, “We want stringent punishment for the culprits. Women deserve security. We are not affiliated with any political organization. We have full faith in the system; we simply want justice.” Another protester, Chumki Shah, expressed her concerns, saying, “I also have a daughter. She is not safe. We need to take decisive action to ensure her safety. We want justice.”
Protester Prapti Shah added, “This must stop. Doctors save lives, and no one should take a doctor’s life like this. No girl should have to say that she has been violated. This needs to end. How much more can we tolerate?”
The investigation into the case is advancing, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) employing advanced techniques such as 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward where the crime occurred. The CBI has also conducted psychological evaluations of the primary suspect. Sources confirm that a psychologist from the CBI team arrived in Kolkata on Saturday to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The Supreme Court of India has taken cognizance of the case, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud leading a bench that will hear the matter on August 20.
On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The incident has led to nationwide strikes, with civil societies and doctors across the country protesting and demanding severe punishment for the accused and calling for increased safety and security measures for medical professionals.
