Justice Sanjib Banerjee, who retired as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court last year, said he was transferred to the Meghalaya High Court after he reported to the Chief Justice of India about corrupt judges on the basis of evidence.
During an interview with a legal news website, Justice Banerjee also said that those ”corrupt judges” had friends in high positions, which resulted in their transfers.
“That was just an excuse due to which justice was not done to him. The reasons are much more serious and much deeper; which troubles the institution. The reason is that I found corrupt judges and I have informed our Chief Justice of India about this. reported that “corrupt judges are backing this up with evidence.”
He said, “Unfortunately, those corrupt judges had friends in high positions, which resulted in my transfer. That was the real reason. No comment on the Election Commission.”
Sanjib Banerjee was transferred to the Meghalaya High Court following recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium in September 2021. Banerjee, who hails from Kolkata, started practicing law in 1990 and was appointed a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court in 2006.
In April 2021, Banerjee, then Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, criticized the Election Commission of India for allowing political rallies amid the deadly second wave of COVID-19.
He said that the poll panel is completely responsible for the second wave of Covid-19 by not stopping political parties from organizing election rallies. Banerjee also said that a case of murder should be registered against Election Commission officials.
“Your organization is completely responsible for the second wave of COVID-19. Election Commission officials should probably be booked on charges of murder,” he said in a judgment.
