EC Urges Political Parties to Avoid Derogatory Words Towards Persons with Disabilities

EC

The Election Commission (EC) has asked politicians to refrain from using derogatory words when referring to individuals with disabilities during public speeches.

The commission emphasized that the use of such language by members of any political party and their candidates could be perceived as an offense against people with disabilities.

In an advisory released to political parties on Wednesday, the election watchdog highlighted that the essence of democracy hinges on the representation of all communities in the electoral process.

The advisory stated, “Accessible and inclusive elections have been a non-negotiable priority for the Election Commission of India, particularly to ensure equal participation of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). With renewed determination, the Commission is actively working to promote the principles of accessibility and inclusivity in the electoral process.”
