The Bilaspur court shooting, where an undertrial was targeted by two motorcycle-borne assailants, allegedly orchestrated by a former MLA’s son to retaliate against an attack on his father, Police stated.
Saurabh Patyal was shot at by unknown assailants on June 20 at the Bilaspur court premises. Patyal is one of 13 individuals currently on trial for their alleged involvement in an assault on Congress leader Bamber Thakur, a former MLA from the Bilaspur assembly seat, on February 23.
Police investigations indicate that the shooters responsible for the court attack were hired by Puranjan, Thakur’s son.
Immediately following the incident, police arrested Sunny Gill, 34, a native of Ludhiana, Punjab. Anmol Sharma, also known as Gaurav Nadda, who initially evaded capture, was later apprehended. Sharma had sheltered Gill at his residence before the attack.
Gill was remanded to six days of police custody by a local court, while Sharma was placed in judicial custody for 14 days. Police noted multiple cases registered against Gill in Punjab.
The shooting incident, which caused widespread alarm in the town, prompted protests from the BJP, criticizing the state’s deteriorating law and order situation and holding the Congress government responsible.
