“Fair Probe To Be Conducted Into Sambhal Violence”: UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak

Violence erupted in Sambhal, UP, following a controversial survey at a Mughal-era mosque, leading to the deaths of 4 individuals and numerous injuries.

The incident, which unfolded on November 19, involved stone-pelting by alleged anti-social elements during an ASI survey at the Shahi Jama Masjid, which some claim was once a temple.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak addressed the issue, clarifying that the survey was conducted under court orders. He assured that a fair investigation into the incident would be carried out.

“A fair investigation will be conducted into the incident,” Pathak stated, expressing sadness over the loss of lives.

However, the incident sparked political outrage. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, criticized the ruling BJP, accusing it of exacerbating tensions and fostering divisions between Hindu and Muslim communities. Gandhi condemned the “biased and hasty attitude” of the UP government, asserting that it contributed to the violence.

On ‘X’ (previously twitter), Gandhi stated, “The administration’s insensitive action without listening to all parties further vitiated the situation and resulted in the death of many people – for which the BJP government is directly responsible.”

Gandhi urged the Supreme Court to intervene, emphasizing the need for justice and expressing concerns over the BJP’s role in creating communal rifts. “BJP’s use of power to create rift and discrimination between Hindu-Muslim communities is neither in the interest of the state nor the country,” he wrote. He also appealed for peace and mutual harmony, calling for unity over communalism.

Meanwhile, the DIG of Moradabad Range, Muniraj G, confirmed that the death toll had risen to four. He stated that the situation in Sambhal was now under control, with police deployed at strategic locations to maintain order.

Four FIRs were filed, and the authorities assured that action was being taken against those responsible for the violence. He also mentioned that the internet suspension would be lifted as the situation stabilized.

The tragic events have led to concerns about police actions. The DK Foundation for Freedom and Justice filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission, alleging that the police had disproportionately targeted the Muslim community during the violence.

According to the petition, indiscriminate police firing had led to the deaths of three Muslim individuals, a claim that is under investigation.

In response to the unrest, the Sambhal district administration issued a notice barring outsiders, social organizations, and public representatives from entering the area without prior authorization. This decision was made to prevent further escalation of violence and ensure public safety.

The incident also follows a broader legal and political context. The survey of the mosque was ordered after a petition filed by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain, claiming that the mosque was originally a temple. A similar survey had been conducted earlier in November, under heavy police presence.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on finding accountability for the violence, with the political debate over the role of the state government and the impact of the BJP’s policies intensifying.
