Abhijit Gangopadhyay announced on Tuesday that he is joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), hours after resigning as a judge of the Calcutta High Court.
Speaking at a press conference, he accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of being “synonymous with corruption” and pledged to fight against it until the end.
“I will be joining the BJP, possibly on March 7. I am aligning with the BJP because it is a national party that is actively combating the corruption of the TMC in Bengal,” he stated.
Gangopadhyay sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, with copies sent to CJI DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam in the morning.
He arrived at his chamber at the high court in the morning, following which the resignation letter was dispatched. Justice Gangopadhyay had previously announced on Sunday his intention to resign on March 5, 2024.
