The Gujarat Government on Monday opposed the bail applications of the convicts serving a life sentence in the 2002 Godhra Carnage Case.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for Gujarat Government and stated that 59 people were burnt alive in the coach including included children, and women. The coach was therefore locked from the outside and stones were pelted from outside so that the people couldn’t get out. This is the rarest of the rarest cases and therefore deserves the death penalty. No leniency should be shown to them.
Further, the court asked the lawyers of the convicts & the Gujarat government to discuss among themselves and prepare a chart of all the convicts.
Certain things like the age of the convicts, charges that were against them, and how much time they have spent behind bars should be mentioned in the chart.. The Supreme Court will hear after three weeks.
The Supreme Court is hearing the bail pleas of 15 stone pelters in the 2002 Godhra carnage.
