The Gujarat police have filed an FIR against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), for issuing threats to disrupt the ICC Cricket World Cup, which is scheduled to commence on October 5 at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad.
The FIR, filed by the cyber crime branch of the Ahmedabad police, states that individuals across the country received a threatening pre-recorded voice message from Pannun via a foreign phone number. The message prompted recipients to report it to the police through various channels.
The recorded message warned that October 5 would mark the beginning of the “World Terror Cup” instead of the Cricket World Cup, with Sikhs for Justice intending to display Khalistani flags in Ahmedabad. The message also made references to seeking revenge for the assassination of Shaheed Nijjar, pledging to use ballots against violence and votes against aggression.
The FIR underscores that Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is designated as a terrorist by the Government of India and operates an organization called Sikhs for Justice from a foreign country. His actions are aimed at spreading fear, fostering enmity between Sikhs and other communities in India, and engaging in terror activities within the country, particularly on social media platforms such as TwitterX.
The Cricket World Cup 2023 is scheduled to begin at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad on October 5. This threat message surfaces amidst a diplomatic dispute between India and Canada regarding the alleged assassination of designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, on June 18.
