IIT Kharagpur Mysterious Death: Calcutta HC Bashes Police Officials For ‘Slow’ Investigation

The high court on Monday bashes the police officials for their ‘slow’ investigation into the mysterious death case of IIT Kharagpur student, Faizan Ahmed.

A single bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha was hearing the matter.

“Why are the police going slow? Are the police not aware of who they have to call and whose testimony they have to take?” Justice Mantha asked.

On Monday, the additional superintendent of police in Kharagpur told the high court that they were waiting for the IIT authorities to take disciplinary action against those who allegedly harassed Faizan Ahmed.

Justice Mantha then inquired as to why the police were awaiting the IIT’s report.

“IIT Kharagpur will give its report when they are through with it. Why will the police wait for that?” the judge asked.

“The court is not going to give lessons on how to conduct the probe. That is the job of the police. They should not leave any stone unturned and keep this in mind.”

The family of Faizan Ahmed, whose body was found in a hostel room on the campus on October 14, moved the high court in November saying they were “dissatisfied with the inept and tardy investigation by the local police authorities”.

Faizan’s family had lodged an FIR filed with the Kharagpur Town police station alleging that he had been murdered.

The court ordered the police to file its final report on February 20.
