Jharkhand HC Dismisses PIL Against Chief Minister Hemant Soren

On Wednesday, the Jharkhand High Court dismissed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his relatives in connection with an illegal mining case.

The petitioner, Sunil Kumar Mahato, had initiated the PIL.

The court noted that the petition essentially replicated an earlier PIL filed by Shiv Shankar Sharma.

“This PIL does not bring forth any new elements,” stated the court.

Notably, Chief Minister Hemant Soren is listed as respondent number 7 in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) initiated by Shiv Shankar Sharma.

In Shiv Shankar Sharma’s PIL, he sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against Chief Minister Hemant Soren for allegedly securing a stone mining lease by abusing his official position.

The case revolves around the allocation of a stone mine lease in Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s favor in the Angara block of Ranchi.

In his capacity as the minister of the mines department, Hemant Soren granted a mining lease for quarrying stones on over 88 decimals of land in Angara block, Ranchi, in 2021.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren had previously held the mining lease, and upon its expiration, he reapplied for it.

However, when the lease was granted and the issue was brought to attention.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren relinquished it in response to public scrutiny.
