‘Journey of India Becoming More Mature as a Democracy’: PM Modi on 75 Years of Supreme Court

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Supreme Court of India as it celebrates its 75th anniversary, calling the milestone a reflection of India’s constitutional values and democratic maturity.

Addressing the inaugural event of the National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Saturday, PM Modi emphasized that this occasion represents not just the evolution of an institution but the progress of India’s democracy itself.

“75 years of the Supreme Court, this is not just the journey of an institution. This is the journey of the Constitution of India and its constitutional values. This is the journey of India becoming more mature as a democracy,” the Prime Minister remarked.

“The people of India have never distrusted the Indian judiciary and the Supreme Court. Therefore, these 75 years of the Supreme Court further enhance the glory of India as the Mother of Democracy…I can say with confidence that the Supreme Court has upheld the trust and faith we have in our institution….” PM Modi further added.

PM Modi also noted the significant investment in judicial infrastructure over the past decade. “To address delays in justice, significant efforts have been made,” he said. “In the last 10 years alone, the country has invested approximately 8,000 crore rupees in judicial infrastructure, with 75 percent of this spending occurring in the last decade.”

The Prime Minister inaugurated the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary and unveiled a stamp and coin commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court. The conference, which will be held on August 31 and September 1, includes five working sessions focused on various aspects of the district judiciary, including infrastructure, human resources, inclusive courtrooms, judicial security, judicial wellness, case management, and judicial training.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Supreme Court Bar Association President Kapil Sibal were also in attendance. At the event, Chief Justice Chandrachud presented a memento to PM Modi in recognition of the occasion.
