Following protests over an allegedly “shoddy investigation,” police added culpable homicide to the case against a 20-year-old woman who was killed in the early hours of the New Year when a motorist struck her scooter and dragged her 12 kilometres under the car on the city’s highways.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) took cognizance on Monday and requested specific action in addition to the medical reports. Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), also took notice of the situation and issued a notice to the Delhi police.
According to the authorities, the woman was killed after being struck by a car and dragged along the road for over twelve kilometres while being caught in the wheels.
The mother of the deceased has claimed that her daughter was sexually assaulted by the five accused males when she was discovered naked. The claims, however, have been refuted by the police.
The Union Home Ministry on Monday assigned Delhi Police Special Commissioner Shalini Singh the task of probing into the Kanjhawala case. The Central Government has also mandated that the Delhi Police Commissioner deliver the investigation report as soon as possible.
