Kapil Sibal Announces Candidacy for SCBA President in Upcoming Elections

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal has announced his candidacy for the position of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president, with elections scheduled for May 16, 2024.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Sibal served as additional solicitor general of India during 1989-90 and was designated as senior advocate in 1983.

During the period from 1995 to 2002, the former Union minister held the position of SCBA president three times.

Rohit Pandey, the SCBA Honorary Secretary, confirmed that the seasoned lawyer is vying for the role of president.

Currently, senior advocate Adish Aggarwala serves as the president of the SCBA.

Earlier, the apex court mandated that certain positions in the executive committee of the SCBA be set aside for female members.

A bench comprising justices Surya Kant and K V Vishwanathan expressed the opinion that the SCBA is a premier institution and an integral part of the country’s highest judicial forum.

It directed that there must be reservation for female members of the Bar.

Furthermore, the bench stipulated that in the forthcoming 2024-2025 SCBA polls, the position of treasurer of the executive committee should be reserved for women.

The SCBA elections are scheduled for May 16, with vote counting set for May 18. The results will be announced on May 19.
