The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Thane, Maharashtra, has awarded a compensation of Rs 23.54 lakh to the family of Sabir Haroon Saldurkar, a man who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 2013.
The tribunal’s chairman, Principal District Judge S.B. Agrawal, ordered the owner of the tempo involved in the accident and United India Insurance to pay the compensation with 7.5% interest per annum.
The order, dated October 4, was made public on Saturday. Advocate P.V. Rao represented Saldurkar’s family, while the tempo’s owner did not appear in court, leading to an ex-parte decision against him.
According to Advocate Rao, the deceased, Sabir Saldurkar, was employed with Metito (Overseas) Qatar WLL in Doha, Qatar, and earned a monthly salary of Rs 50,000. On November 28, 2013, while riding his motorcycle from Dapoli to Harne, Saldurkar was struck by a tempo that was being driven recklessly. He sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
The tribunal’s compensation of Rs 23.54 lakh includes Rs 15,000 for loss of estate, Rs 40,000 for loss of filial consortium, and Rs 15,000 for funeral expenses. Additionally, the tribunal ordered that Rs 13 lakh be placed in a fixed deposit in the name of Saldurkar’s wife and Rs 10 lakh be kept in a deposit for his daughter.
This ruling ensures financial support for the victim’s family while highlighting the legal accountability of reckless driving.
