In a chilling incident in Chhattisgarh’s Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district, a 20-year-old woman was fatally stabbed by a knife-wielding man, 2 months after their relationship had soured.
The gruesome attack, which took place recently and was captured on CCTV, showing onlookers standing by in horror but failing to intervene.
The perpetrator, 28-year-old Durgesh Prajapati, fled the scene but was later apprehended in the Marwahi area, according to district Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhavna Gupta. The attack occurred around 11:30 am in front of an ATM in Gaurela town, as the victim, Ranjana Yadav, was traveling with her cousin brother.
“Ranjana, a college student and part-time beauty parlour worker, had been in a relationship with Prajapati for 3 years,” Gupta reported. Despite being married twice and currently living with his second wife, Prajapati was unable to accept the end of his relationship with Ranjana. She had stopped communicating with him and blocked his phone number two months prior, ignoring all his attempts to reach out.
Enraged by her behavior, Prajapati allegedly plotted the attack. Leaving his job at a petrol pump early in the morning, he followed Ranjana. When he intercepted her and her cousin on their two-wheeler, an argument ensued. As Ranjana’s cousin attempted to call their relatives for help, Prajapati pulled out a knife and stabbed Ranjana multiple times, killing her instantly.
The CCTV footage revealed a masked Prajapati repeatedly stabbing the woman, who also had her face covered. The victim’s cousin was seen fleeing the scene during the attack. “Multiple police teams, with the assistance of cyber cell personnel, were able to track and arrest the accused within 6-7 hours of the crime,” Gupta stated.
A case has been registered, and further investigations are underway.
