In a recent incident, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in Assam’s Nagaon district, according to police reports.
The incident occurred on August 22 in the Dhing area while the girl was returning home from her tuition class. Locals found her in a semi-conscious state by the roadside and quickly admitted her to a hospital.
Two suspects have been detained for questioning, as confirmed by Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police, Nagaon district. “Our investigation is on. We are now waiting for the doctor’s report,” he stated.
The incident has ignited widespread protests in the area, with locals demanding justice for the victim and strict punishment for the perpetrators. In response, several organizations called for a local bandh (shutdown) in Dhing on Friday.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the attack, describing it as “a crime against humanity” that has shocked the collective conscience of the state. He directed the state DGP to visit the site and ensure swift action, vowing, “We will NOT SPARE anyone & BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE.”
This incident follows nation-wide outrage over the recent murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor in West Bengal’s Kolkata on August 9.
