Mizoram Election Witnesses Higher Female Voter Turnout at 81.25%

 The recently conducted Mizoram assembly election on November 7 saw a higher turnout of female voters compared to male voters. The Chief Electoral Officer’s Office in Mizoram reported a 81.25% turnout among female voters, slightly surpassing the 80.04% turnout among male voters.

Overall, the electoral participation was robust, with 80.66% of the total 8.52 lakh voters in the state exercising their right to vote, determining the fate of 174 candidates.

Across the 11 districts of the state, Serchhip district recorded the highest voter turnout at 84.78%, followed by Mamit district with 84.65%, Hnahthial district with 84.19%, and Lunglei district with 83.68%.

Other districts also showcased significant participation: Kolasib district recorded 82.95%, Khawzawl district saw 82.40%, Saitual district had 80.80%, Lawngtlai district presented 80.58%, Champhai district had 79.92%, Aizawl district recorded 77.83%, and Siaha district saw 77.03%.

Specific constituencies like Thorang in Lunglei district marked an 88.19% turnout, while Tuikum in Serchhip district and West Tuipui in Lunglei district showed 87.32% and 87.03% turnout, respectively.

The elections have put the Mizo National Front, led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, against a formidable challenge posed by a six-party alliance comprising the Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM) and the Congress as they vie to retain power.

The results for the 40-member Mizoram assembly, along with four other states undergoing elections, are slated for declaration on December 3, 2023.
