Police have apprehended a 27-year-old woman for purportedly abetting the suicide of her teenage stepdaughter in Maharashtra’s Thane district, an official stated on Wednesday.
The woman, residing in Ambadi Naka, Bhiwandi, allegedly subjected the 15-year-old girl to mental and physical harassment, stated Ganeshpuri police station inspector D T Sonke.
The girl reportedly took her own life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house on Monday evening.
Upon receiving the alert, the police swiftly arrived at the scene and dispatched the body for postmortem examination. Acting on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, an auto-rickshaw driver, the woman was arrested on Tuesday and charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 306 (abetment of suicide), as stated by the official.
