Need to Pay Attention at Trial Courts to Curb Case Overload: CJI DY Chandrachud

CJI DY Chandrachud

Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Saturday emphasized the necessity to “pay attention at trial courts” to alleviate the burden of the increasing number of cases.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of an arbitration center, CJI Chandrachud highlighted, “Trial courts are where the solution to problems begins; there is a need to pay attention. Many such cases are escalating to the Supreme Court, which could be resolved at the trial court level. Due to the unavailability of bail in minor cases, individuals are resorting to the Supreme Court, exacerbating the pressure there.”

Addressing the state of Uttar Pradesh, CJI Chandrachud noted the rise in investment within the region. He stressed the importance of fostering expansion and trust within the judicial sector to facilitate the establishment of industries.

Encouraging advocates and legal professionals to embrace technology, the CJI urged, “I implore all senior advocates to integrate technology into their practices, utilizing tablets and laptops. Many individuals are already adopting this approach.”

Regarding the influx of young people into the legal profession, he remarked, “This generation possesses a unique perspective, with a significant number of women entering the field. They perceive their future as secure within it.”

Reflecting on his tenure as the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court, Chandrachud shared, “Despite growing up in an urban environment, my experience in Uttar Pradesh, the heart of India, has been enlightening and enriching.”
