NGT Issues Notice To Delhi Govt After Plea Says Pigeon Droppings Pose Health Hazard

The National Green Tribunal has issued notices to the Delhi government and several civic authorities following a petition that raises concerns over the environmental and health risks posed by unchecked pigeon feeding in the National Capital Region.

A bench led by NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A. Senthil Vel acknowledged that the matter involves serious environmental compliance issues.

The petition alleges that the rampant feeding of pigeons across Delhi, particularly on pavements, traffic islands, and public walkways, has led to widespread droppings that pose a health threat to citizens.

“When these droppings dry up and are swept, they mix with dust in the air, releasing toxic particles that degrade air quality and pose serious health risks,” the tribunal noted, quoting from the plea.

The petition specifically warns about diseases like hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a severe lung condition that can be caused by prolonged exposure to pigeon droppings. The condition leads to lung scarring and persistent breathing problems.

Taking note of these concerns, the NGT directed the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Public Works Department, and other relevant bodies to file their replies by affidavit.

The matter has been scheduled for its next hearing on October 8, 2025.
