NGT Panel To Submit Report On Solid Waste Management In Hisar, Haryana

The National Green Tribunal has recently established a panel and instructed it to submit an action taken report on solid waste management in Hisar district, Haryana.

This decision follows a petition alleging rule violations by the Municipal Corporation of Hisar, including the collection of unsegregated household waste and inadequate garbage disposal services, leading to open dumping by residents.

Acting Chairperson Justice Sheo Kumar Singh, along with judicial member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel, noted that there are approximately 1.3 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste in Hisar, resulting from a gap between waste generation and processing.

In light of this, the bench called for a report from a joint committee comprising the Hisar collector and a representative from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board.

The committee has been directed to visit the area, assess the situation, and provide a factual report on solid waste management within four weeks. The report should cover the quantity of waste generated, its processing, measures taken to bridge the waste generation-processing gap, and the amount of remediated legacy waste. The Haryana State PCB will serve as the nodal agency for coordination and logistical support.

The NGT has scheduled the matter for further proceedings on September 6. This action aims to address the pressing issue of solid waste management in Hisar and promote sustainable environmental practices in the region.
