The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a tragic explosion at a private industrial unit in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh, which resulted in the deaths of at least 17 workers and injured several others.
The NHRC has directed authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The explosion and subsequent fire occurred at a pharmaceutical plant on Wednesday (August 21). The damage was mitigated somewhat because the plant had fewer workers present at the time due to the lunch break. However, the death toll may rise as search operations continue.
In a statement issued today, the NHRC expressed grave concern over the apparent breach of safety norms that contributed to the incident. The commission has issued notices to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, instructing them to thoroughly investigate the matter.
The investigation will focus on whether the industrial unit adhered to safety regulations and legal standards, and if there was any negligence by the supervising authorities. The NHRC has mandated that a detailed report be submitted within two weeks.
This report should cover the status of the FIR related to the incident, the treatment provided to the injured, and the compensation process for the victims’ families.
Additionally, the NHRC has requested information on any relief and rehabilitation efforts for the victims and actions taken against responsible officials. Meanwhile, the State Disaster Response Force is actively searching for survivors, and the cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Authorities are concerned that more bodies may be trapped under the rubble.
