NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance Of Gang-Rape And Murder In Rajasthan

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report disclosing the alleged gang-rape and murder of a 21-year-old Dalit woman on June 20, 2023, in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan. The report implicates three individuals, including two police personnel.

The NHRC has observed that if the contents of the media report are true, they represent a violation of the victim’s human rights by those entrusted with ensuring the safety and security of citizens. Consequently, notices have been issued to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Rajasthan, demanding a detailed report on the matter within four weeks.

The report should encompass the current status of the ongoing police investigation, any departmental actions taken against the public servants involved, and the arrest of the third accused. Additionally, the NHRC seeks information on the relief provided by the state to the victim’s family.

According to the media report published on June 22, 2023, both policemen have been suspended, and the matter is under investigation.
