NIA Deepens 26/11 Probe: Rana In Custody For Wider Terror Plot

Tahawwur Rana

Tahawwur Rana, a key conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has been remanded to 18 days of National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody following his extradition from the United States.

Investigators suspect that Rana may have been involved in planning similar terror plots across multiple Indian cities, extending the scope of the original conspiracy.

NIA Plans

According to sources, the NIA is preparing to take Rana to several locations across India in an effort to reconstruct events from 17 years ago and uncover the full extent of the conspiracy. Officials believe that the tactics used during the 26/11 attacks, which killed 166 people and injured over 238, might have been intended for replication in other parts of the country.

The agency views Rana’s prolonged custody as crucial to facilitating detailed interrogations and collecting evidence that could point to a broader terror network.

Arrest After U.S. Extradition

Rana was formally arrested upon his arrival in India, after being extradited from the United States. His extradition followed the exhaustion of all legal remedies to block the move.

Presented before a special NIA court, the agency stressed that his custodial interrogation is essential to uncover deeper layers of the terror plot and establish the full scope of his involvement.

Connection With David Headley

Investigators revealed that David Coleman Headley, another key figure in the 26/11 case, had shared details of the planned attacks with Rana prior to the events. Their email communications are now key evidence in the case, and authorities aim to pinpoint Rana’s exact role in aiding and facilitating the attacks.

Security Tight During Court Appearance

Rana’s court appearance in Delhi was held under tight security. The Delhi Police evacuated the court premises and restricted media access to ensure safety, reflecting the high-risk profile of the accused.

The NIA has maintained that Rana collaborated with terrorist organizations to plan and execute one of the most devastating terror attacks on Indian soil. His arrival in India and subsequent arrest are seen as a significant development in the continued pursuit of justice for the victims of 26/11.

As the investigation widens, authorities hope Rana’s interrogation will provide critical insights into possible threats and expose the full network behind the attacks.
