The police have registered a case against four unidentified individuals for allegedly defrauding a 37-year-old woman from Airoli in Navi Mumbai out of over Rs 54 lakh online, an official reported.
Based on the complaint filed by the victim, who is pregnant, the cyber police registered the FIR on Saturday under sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and the Information Technology Act, the official stated.
The accused offered the victim freelance work, promising to pay her for rating companies and restaurants. If she completed five such tasks, they assured her she could earn a significant sum. Trusting their offer, she engaged in the tasks and followed their instructions, transferring Rs 54,30,000 to various accounts between May 7 and 10, as per the complaint.
However, when the victim requested her promised payment upon task completion, the accused ceased responding to her calls. It dawned on her that she had fallen victim to deception, prompting her to approach the police, the official explained.
The victim, on maternity leave and seeking to utilize her time for online tasks to generate income, lost her entire savings to fraudsters, according to the police.
The cyber police are currently investigating the crime, the official added.
