PM Modi Expresses Delight and Praises CJI Chandrachud for NJDG Initiative

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday announced that the Supreme Court will soon be linked to the National Judicial Data Grid, a repository of data related to cases and disposals pending in courts from the taluka level to the national level. Although currently only High Court level data is available on this grid, but soon the data of not only the district but also the courts up to the taluka level will be available on it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted praise soon after CJI Chandrachud announced the National Judicial Data Grid. He wrote in his tweet, ‘This is a commendable step by the Supreme Court and CJI DY Chandrachud. Such use of technology will increase transparency and enhance the justice delivery system in our country. Earlier, PM Modi had also praised CJI Chandrachud from the ramparts of the Red Fort. At that time, PM Modi had praised the efforts of the CJI to make judicial orders and decisions available in Indian languages.

Starting the day’s proceedings in the Supreme Court on Thursday, the CJI said that the data of the apex court will be uploaded on NJDG (National Judicial Data Grid) on a real-time basis.

The CJI said, “A small announcement. But it is a historic day. NJDG is a unique and informative platform developed by the in-house team of NIC and the Supreme Court. Now you can get real-time information at the click of a button. You can see the information.” Pendency and disposal of cases, year-wise, total pendency of registered and unregistered cases, quorum-wise number of cases decided etc. all will be available at a single click.”

Furthermore, the CJI also said that uploading the data on NJDG will also ensure transparency and accountability in the judicial sector.

NJDG is a database of orders, judgments and case details of 18,735 district and subordinate courts and high courts, created as an online platform under the eCourts project. The data will be updated on near real-time basis by the connected district and taluka courts.

It provides data related to judicial proceedings and decisions of all computerized District and Subordinate Courts of the country. All High Courts have also joined NJDG through web services, thereby facilitating easy access of litigants to justice.
