“PM’s Statements In Last Decade ‘Utterly Divisive'”: Kapil Sibal

Rajya Sabha MP and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Kapil Sibal, sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of making divisive statements over the past decade, including during his recent Independence Day address from the Red Fort.

Sibal remarked, “If you look at the history of India, in the last 10 years the kind of statements that have come from the highest office of the country, namely the office of the Prime Minister, have been so divisive that I don’t think in the history of this country any Prime Minister has ever made the kind of divisive statements that our PM has made; not only him but also members of the political parties that he belongs to.”

He further highlighted that these divisive remarks aren’t limited to the Prime Minister but extend to other members of his political party. Sibal pointed to recent comments made by the Chief Minister of Assam regarding ‘love jihad’ and ‘flood jihad,’ as well as directives issued in Uttar Pradesh concerning Kanwariyas, which included requiring the names of property owners.

Sibal went on to condemn the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for undermining democracy by toppling elected governments. He expressed concern that while discussions on the Uniform Civil Code are necessary, they are being advanced by the BJP with a divisive agenda.

He questioned the BJP’s selective focus on issues like Triple Talaq while ignoring the plight of Hindu women who face similar challenges. Sibal also criticized the BJP’s stance on infiltration, noting the exclusion of Bengali Hindus from entering India, despite their vulnerability.

“When you talk about infiltration, who are the real infiltrators in this country? Those who usurp power by making people ministers and toppling elected governments…They have infiltrated into the political system and destroyed the foundation of democracy,” Sibal emphasized.

Sibal’s remarks reflect a deep concern over the current government’s approach, accusing it of creating division and eroding the democratic values of the nation.
