Police detain 4 shopkeepers for illegal gutka sales in Navi Mumbai

Police have detained four shopkeepers in the Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) for allegedly selling gutka. The banned substance, valued at Rs 14,589, was taken from the shopkeepers.

During a raid on a vegetable market in Vashi on Monday, representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that the four individuals had gutka stored and being sold at their establishments, according to an APMC police station official.

He stated that the four people, who were between the ages of thirty and forty-five, had been taken into custody.
As per the police, an FIR was filed against them for violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, the FDA regulations, sections 328 (causing harm by means of poisoning), 272 (adulterating food or drink intended for sale), 273 (selling toxic food or drink), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Maharashtra has outlawed the sale and consumption of gutka, or flavored and scented tobacco.
