Prisoner Stabbed in Gang Brawl at Tihar Jail: Reports

Tihar Jail

A prisoner sustained stab wounds during a brawl within Tihar Jail, purportedly involving rival gang members, as per police reports on Thursday.

The injured individual, identified as Hitesh and awaiting trial for murder, was promptly taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for medical attention.

According to an officer, the altercation erupted around 11:15 am on Wednesday between Hitesh, affiliated with the Gogi gang, and two individuals from the Tillu Tajpuriya gang.

A police source disclosed that Hitesh was stabbed with a weapon resembling an ice-pick.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vichitra Veer stated, “A report was lodged at Hari Nagar Police Station from DDU on Wednesday regarding an injured prisoner from Tihar jail being admitted to the hospital. In response, local law enforcement officials visited the hospital and initiated an inquiry.”

“The names of the alleged assailants, Gaurav Lohra and Gurinder, were provided. However, their identities are subject to investigation. Hitesh sustained injuries and was subsequently transferred to DDU hospital,” Veer added.

The officer mentioned that Hitesh has been incarcerated since 2019, while Gaurav and Gurinder are facing trials for murder and attempted murder cases.

“Considering the severity of the injuries, a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered, and investigations are underway,” the DCP affirmed.

It’s noteworthy that gangster Tajpuriya met his demise last year in May, having been stabbed by several members of a rival gang within the same jail premises.
