A Mumbai court recently heard testimony from Sapna Gill, a social media influencer, who claimed she didn’t know cricketer Prithvi Shaw after being detained in connection with an alleged attack on Shaw’s car.
Gill was then sent to police custody till February 20.
According to the influencer, Shaw and his companion apologised, requested her not to call the police, and then left.
Regarding the assertion that the incident started when she asked Shaw for a selfie, Gill responded, “I do not know him, nor have I ever seen him. I never asked him for a selfie.”
According to media reports, it was claimed on behalf of Gill’s attorney that Shaw has a drinking habit and that is why the BCCI has banned him.
“Sapna didn’t say anything like give ₹50,000 and end the case. There is no proof of this. Sapna is an influencer, after 15 hours Prithvi Shaw gets the complaint done through his friend in the police… why it was not done on the same day?” Her lawyer contended.
“My friend had requested the selfie. I had no idea he was a cricketer. We were only two, and Prithvi Shaw was with eight other people. Everything was wrong because they had food in the hotel, we were partying in the club, and he was drunk. The police asked us to put an end to the situation,” Gill claimed.
On Thursday, Oshiwara Police filed a case against Gill, her companion Thakur, and six others under Indian Criminal Code sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 148 (rioting), 384 (extortion), and 506 in response to a complaint made by Shaw’s flatmate and friend Ashish Yadav (criminal intimidation).
Following an altercation with Gill and her friend Shobit Thakur in the early hours of Wednesday, the cricketer allegedly refused to take any more selfies with the influencer, and as a result, Shaw was allegedly manhandled and his car was attacked with a baseball bat outside of a hotel in Santacruz area of Mumbai.
Two of the accused who allegedly chased the cricketer’s car as he drove to the Oshiwara police station following the incident were detained on Friday, but Thakur and other suspects have not yet been located.
