Same-Sex Marriage Sway Injustice To Family System: Kerala’s Syro-Malabar Church

The Syro-Malabar church, an influential Catholic church in Kerala, has expressed its strong opposition against the legal validation sought for same-sex marriages.

Hailing the stand of Union government in the Supreme Court, the Syro-Malabar church in a Friday statement said that giving legal validation for such relationships is “unnatural & injustice to the family system”.

Therefore, the church stated that same-sex marriage is a violation of the rights of children to be born & grow in a natural relationship between man & woman.

It said that, “Legalising same-sex marriage will lead to the demand for legalization of disruptive sexual demands like attraction towards children, attraction towards animals, attraction between blood relations.”

It broadens support to the Centre’s stand that marriage is a relationship between 2 persons of the opposite sex and a family comprising a biological man, woman and their children.

It said that, “Same-sex marriage is a negation of the natural order of relationships between a man and a woman. It is also an injustice to the family concept and civil society.”

Further, in the statement, the church made it clear that, though it has a concerned attitude towards sexual minorities and maintains strong stand in marriage is the relationship between men and women.

A 5-judge constitution bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud heard arguments on a batch of pleas seeking legal sanction for same-sex marriage.

The hearing in the matter will continue on May 9.
