SC Collegium Recommends Appointment of Advocate Tejas Karia as Delhi HC Judge

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of advocate Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia as a judge of the Delhi High Court.

The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai, highlighted Karia’s expertise in arbitration law. It noted that the increasing volume of arbitration cases in the Delhi High Court necessitates specialized handling.

On October 25, 2023, the then Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, in consultation with his two seniormost colleagues, recommended Karia’s name for the appointment.

In its resolution, the Collegium stated, “Our sole consultee-judge is of the view that the candidate is a domain specialist and has primarily practiced in the field of arbitration. While his appearances in the high court may not be as frequent as expected, his significant involvement before arbitration tribunals compensates for that.”

The resolution further mentioned, “The inputs provided by the Department of Justice in the file indicate that no concerns regarding the candidate’s integrity have been raised. As for the Department of Justice’s observation on the candidate’s age, we find that he meets the threshold age criterion of 45 years as of the date of recommendation by the high court collegium.”

The Collegium expressed confidence that Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia will be a valuable addition to the bench of the Delhi High Court. Besides his appearances in arbitration cases before the High Courts and the Supreme Court, Karia has extensive experience in both domestic and international arbitration, the resolution noted.

“Hence, Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia is eminently fit and suitable for appointment as a judge of the High Court of Delhi. In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend the candidature of Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia, Advocate, for appointment as a judge of the High Court of Delhi,” the Collegium stated.
